Chandigarh: Former India batsman Wasim Jaffer (46) will be the new coach of Punjab. His name will be formally announced soon. There is consensus on his name. He is the highest run-scorer in the Ranji season. He also has a lot of experience in coaching.
Earlier, Avishkar Salvi has been handling the responsibility of this post since August 2022. On the other hand, if we talk about Punjab’s Ranji players, include many names like Arshdeep Singh, Abhishek Sharma, and Shubman Gill, who are included in the Indian cricket team.
More than 45 people had presented their claim for this post. During this, the names of Jaffer and former Australian fast bowler Shaun Tait were at the forefront.
Both have a long experience of coaching. According to sources, Wasim’s name has been finalized. But now it is yet to be approved by the PCA.
Wasim Jaffer is from Mumbai. He has been a right-handed opening batter and right-arm off-break bowler. He made his Test debut in the home series against South Africa in 2000. In November 2018, he became the first batsman to score 11,000 runs in the competition.
In June 2006, he scored his first Test double-century against the West Indies at the Antigua Recreation Ground. While during the second inning, he scored more than 212 runs. Which is the most runs scored by an Indian batsman on Caribbean soil.
He played his last Test match in 2008 against South Africa. He has been the batting coach of the Bangladesh cricket team. He has been with the Punjab Kings in the IPL. Apart from this, he has worked with teams from many other states.
