Paris: In a major heartbreak for all Indians and cruel twist of fate Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Olympics. She has been found ‘Overweight’ as per the IOA. As per reports, she was found to be overweight by 100 grams. The decision has stunned everyone as she was to play the final match of 50 kg Wrestling today.
Indian Olympic Association in a statement said, “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares the news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Women’s Wrestling 50kg category. Despite the team’s best efforts overnight, her weight exceeded 50kg by a few grams this morning. There will be no further comment by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the ongoing competition”.
Vinesh Phogat who the day before became the hope for India’s first gold medal as she qualified for the finals has now been disqualified from the bout. She was found ‘Overweight’ today’s morning. As per the rules, the player must remain within the weight limit on both days of the bout. Yesterday she was withing the weight limit but unfortunately today morning she was found a few grams overweight which led to her disqualification.
Reports claim that Vinesh Phogat tried to reduce her weight by various means of cycling and jogging but during the weight check in the morning she was found few grams overweight of the permissible limit. Vinesh Phogat participated in freestyle wrestling of 50 kg category.

PM Narendra Modi has also reacted on the unfortunate news of Vinesh Phogat disqualification. In a post on X, he said, “Vinesh, you are a champion among champions! You are India’s pride and an inspiration for each and every Indian. Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head-on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you. ”

As per reports, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also spoken to IOA President PT Usha and sought first-hand information from her on the issue and the options India has in the wake of Vinesh’s setback. He asked her to explore the full range of options to help Vinesh’s case. He also urged PT Usha to file a strong protest regarding her disqualification if that helps Vinesh.
