New Delhi: President Draupadi Murmu gave her first statement on Wednesday (August 28), 20 days after the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. In an interview to the news agency PTI, the President said that I am disappointed and dismayed about the incident.

Murmu said “Enough is enough now. No civilized society can allow such atrocities on its daughters and sisters. While students, doctors, and citizens were protesting in Kolkata, criminals were active in other places.”

A 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered on the night of 8-9 August at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The police arrested a civic volunteer named Sanjay Roy on August 10 on the basis of CCTV footage.

The President said that society needs to do self-analysis with honesty, and fairness. She further added that people have to ask themselves some tough questions. “Often people with a hateful mindset consider women less than themselves. They see women as less powerful, less capable, less intelligent”, she added.

President Murmu further said that in the 12 years since the Nirbhaya incident, society has forgotten countless incidents of rape. This collective habit of forgetting is disgusting. Only a society that is afraid to face its history resorts to forgetting things.

The President said that now the time has come for India to fully face its history. “We need to face this distortion together so that it can be nipped in the bud”, she added.
