Mumbai: In a major development related to Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, the Central Board of Film Certification has cleared the film for release but only with heavy modifications.
The film in which Kangana Ranaut portrays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been making headlines ever since its release was announced. After the launch of the trailer, the film faced criticism majorly from the Sikh groups. As per them, Sikhs have been misrepresented and shown in bad light.
For the pan-India release of the film, the Central Board of Film Certification has suggested major modifications including 13 significant cuts. The committee has given U/A certification to the film.
CBFC has directed to add a disclaimer in the beginning of the film that it is ‘inspired by true event’ with a ‘Dramatic Transformation’.
The committee has suggested to fact check the statement made by Jawaharlal Nehru in the beginning of the film. Apart from this, A line in which Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale tells Sanjay Gandhi that “Your party wants votes, we want Khalistan,” has to be removed from the film.
Sikh bodies have registered their objection about the misrepresentation of Sikhs in the film. Taking in view, the CBFC has asked to tone down the violent scenes in the film. Along with this CBFC also suggested modifications related to the title used by Bhindranwale and Operation Blue Star.
This comes after co-producer Zee Entertainment claimed that the film’s certification was being withheld by the Certification Board “illegally” and “arbitrarily.” The next hearing in the plea of Zee Entertainment is scheduled for September 30 by the Bombay High Court.
