A 52-year-old businessman named Philip Hitesh Shah from Matunga tragically took his own life by jumping off Mumbai’s Atal Setu sea bridge early on Gandhi Jayanti. He had been experiencing depression for several months.
According to police, Shah lived with his family and his decision may have been influenced by his mental health struggles. Senior police inspector Anjum Bagwan from the Nhava Sheva police station stated that around 9 am, they received a report of a person who parked his vehicle on the northbound section of the bridge—approximately 14.4 km from Navi Mumbai—and jumped into the water.
This incident, reported on Wednesday, marks the second suicide from the same sea bridge within a span of two days, part of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL). Following the incident, a rescue team was dispatched by Navi Mumbai police. Although the body was recovered and taken to a hospital, Shah was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Inspector Bagwan mentioned that authorities identified Shah through his Aadhaar card found in his vehicle and subsequently informed his family. However, a senior police official noted that there was no suicide note discovered at the scene. Shah’s wife revealed that he had been receiving treatment for his mental health issues.
This tragic event follows the suicide of another individual, a 40-year-old banker named Sushant Chakravarti, who jumped from the same bridge just two days earlier. His body was later found along the shores of Navi Mumbai on October 1. Chakravarti, a deputy manager at a nationalised bank, was said to have been under severe work pressure, which his wife indicated contributed to his struggles.
