On Thursday, the Delhi High Court was informed by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that the prohibitory order issued by the Delhi Police has been modified as of October 2, 2024, allowing climate activist Sonam Wangchuk to be released from detention. Mehta, representing the state, noted that the prohibitory order from September 30, which barred gatherings of five or more people and protests in public spaces until October 5, is now amended.

The bench, led by Chief Justice Manmohan, along with Justice Tushar Rao Gedela, dismissed two petitions filed by Mustafa Haji and Azad that challenged the prohibitory order and sought Wangchuk’s and his associates’ release.

Meanwhile, Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing another petitioner, asserted that Wangchuk and others had been taken to Ambedkar Bhawan and were being confined there. Bhushan indicated that they intended to proceed to Jantar Mantar to promote climate awareness but were being obstructed from doing so.

In light of this information, the court instructed the Delhi Police and the third petitioner to file affidavits regarding their claims. The court was hearing public interest litigations (PILs) seeking the release of around 120 individuals from Ladakh, including Wangchuk, who had reportedly been detained at the Delhi border while attempting to enter the capital to advocate for sixth schedule status for Ladakh.
