Chandigarh administration gives permission for use of green crackers, sets time limit ahead of major festivals

Further, for sale of green crackers, vendors will have to obtain permissions from the DC office through online mode

Chandigarh: With an aim to maintain environmental sustainability and control air pollution, the Chandigarh Administration has permitted the use of eco-friendly green crackers during the upcoming Dussehra, Diwali and Gurupurb. This important decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, which reflects the administration’s commitment towards a clean and healthy environment.

Chandigarh citizens will be able to celebrate their festivals with green crackers within the stipulated time frame. Following is the schedule of use of crackers for various festivals:

Dussehra: October 12, 2024 – Use of green crackers for burning effigies.

Diwali: October 31, 2024 – Use of green crackers from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Gurupurb: November 15, 2024 – Use of green crackers from 4:00 am to 5:00 am
and 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

To ensure the authenticity of the permitted green crackers, these must be duly approved by the National Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), an affiliate of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). These crackers produce significantly less harmful emissions than conventional crackers, making them environment-friendly.

Further, for sale of green crackers, vendors will have to obtain permissions from the DC office through online mode, thereby ensuring transparency and convenience.
