Rome: Italy has experienced intense rainfall and flooding over the past 24 hours, prompting local authorities and emergency services to issue risk warnings for multiple regions. Firefighters reported that in the central Emilia Romagna area, three homes were evacuated in Bologna province after a nearby river overflowed. In Liguria, a 75-year-old man tragically died after falling into a ravine amidst the severe weather. The regional environmental agency warned of thunderstorms and potential heavy rainfall continuing into Friday evening.
Train services, particularly in northern Italy, were disrupted, with all connections between Treviso and Vicenza in the Veneto region suspended on Friday. Regional officials in Tuscany declared a state of emergency in several areas, including Livorno province, where approximately 2,000 hectares of agricultural land were submerged due to flooding from three rivers.
In the south, at least eight homes were evacuated in Naples following structural collapse attributed to the heavy rains. The National Civil Protection Department has warned that challenging weather conditions will persist throughout the weekend, issuing a red alert for central Emilia Romagna and an orange alert for other regions including Veneto, Calabria, Puglia, Sicily, and the remaining areas of Emilia. The red and orange alerts signify the highest and second-highest levels of hydrogeological risk, respectively, in Italy’s four-tier warning system.
