Odisha and neighboring West Bengal are on high alert as cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is expected to make landfall along the coasts of both states between Puri and Sagar islands on the night of October 24 into the early morning of October 25. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the storm, which has intensified from a depression into a deep depression, is likely to strengthen into a severe cyclonic storm with wind speeds of 100-110 km/h, gusting up to 120 km/h.
In preparation, the Odisha government is focused on achieving “Zero Casualty” and has instructed all MLAs to remain present in their constituencies to assist with relief and rescue efforts following the storm. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi also assigned nine ministers to oversee cyclone management in various districts.
The state has established 250 mega cyclone relief centers and set up500 temporary shelters, including schools and colleges, to accommodate those evacuated from vulnerable areas. These shelters are stocked with food, essential supplies, and will have women police personnel for safety.
In West Bengal, schools and colleges in nine districts will be closed from October 23 to October 25 due to the impending storm. The West Bengal government has also suspended ferry services and advised fishermen to avoid deep-sea activities. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed that the state is fully prepared to handle the situation.
Additionally, the East Coast Railway has canceled198 trains for October 23, 24, and 25 to ensure passenger safety in light of the storm. The General Manager of the East Coast Railway has emphasized precautions for the safety of passengers.
