Harvinder Kalyan, a three-time legislator, was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Haryana Assembly on Friday. His nomination came from Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, with Minister Ranbir Gangwa seconding the proposal. Pro-tem Speaker Rabhuvir Kadian announced Kalyan’s election since there were no other candidates.
Kalyan, who belongs to the Other Backward Class (OBC), represents the Gharaunda Assembly segment in Karnal, a district not included in Saini’s ministry. The BJP has achieved a historic third consecutive term in government, winning 48 out of 90 seats, despite a decade-long anti-incumbency wave. Nayab Singh Saini, at 54, was sworn in as Chief Minister again, alongside various leaders from the National Democratic Alliance, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The BJP has garnered support from three independent members, whereas the Congress party captured only 37 seats, the Indian National Lok Dal secured two, and the Jannayak Janta Party and Aam Aadmi Party failed to win any seats.
On October 17, a 45-minute ceremony in Panchkula saw the oath-taking of the Council of Ministers, which includes 11 Cabinet Ministers and two Ministers of State (Independent Charge). The following day, the newly appointed Cabinet Ministers commenced their duties at the Civil Secretariat, with Chief Minister Saini overseeing the transition. Saini first assisted Cabinet Minister Anil Vij in assuming his responsibilities and congratulated him with a bouquet and sweets.
