Three individuals lost their lives after two light aircraft collided mid-air and subsequently crashed in Sydney’s southwest on Saturday.
Emergency services were dispatched to Belimbla Park, located about 65 kilometers southwest of central Sydney, shortly before noon local time following reports of the collision.
Authorities in New South Wales (NSW) confirmed on Saturday afternoon that the bodies of three men were discovered at the crash site.
Two crime scenes were established near the locations where the planes went down. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, one of the aircraft caught fire upon impact.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), which is responsible for investigating transportation accidents, stated that the planes involved in the incident were a Jabiru and a Cessna 182.
A team of transport safety investigators from the ATSB’s Canberra office, with expertise in aircraft operations and maintenance, is preparing to head to the crash sites to begin collecting evidence.
In the coming days, investigators will conduct site mapping, inspect the wreckage of both planes, and recover relevant components for further analysis at the ATSB’s technical facilities in Canberra.
Local police have advised residents to steer clear of the incident area.
