Three individuals, including the President of the Veerarkavu Temple Committee, have been arrested following a fireworks incident that injured 154 people during the Theyyam festival celebrations at the temple, as reported by the Nileshwaram police on Tuesday.
The incident took place during the Kaliyattam festival at the Anjootambalam Veerarkavu Temple in the early hours of Tuesday. Kasargod MP Rajmohan Unnithan confirmed that 154 people suffered injuries due to the fireworks accident during the festival in Veerarkavu Temple, located in Kerala’s Kasargod district.
“This shocking news from Nileshwaram in Kasargod district came last night. Around 154 individuals were injured and have been taken to various hospitals. The Theyyam festival is a tradition in North Malabar, with each family participating in the celebrations. This marks the kickoff of this year’s Theyyam festivities, starting from the Veerarkavu Temple,” Unnithan stated to ANI.
The explosion originated from the fireworks storage area of the temple in Kasargod, with victims now receiving treatment across different hospitals. “The incident happened around 12:30 am during the annual Kaliyattam festival at the Anjootambalam Veerarkavu Temple. Injured individuals have been hospitalized,” he reported. “By the grace of God, it is fortunate that only 154 people were injured in this incident.
