Punjab assembly bypolls 45 candidates in fray in four seats

After the deadline for withdrawing nominations, a total of 45 candidates, including three women, have confirmed their participation in the bypolls for four assembly seats in Punjab. As per the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office, there will be 11 candidates contesting in the Dera Baba Nanak constituency, 14 in both Gidderbaha and Barnala, and six.

After the deadline for withdrawing nominations, a total of 45 candidates, including three women, have confirmed their participation in the bypolls for four assembly seats in Punjab. As per the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office, there will be 11 candidates contesting in the Dera Baba Nanak constituency, 14 in both Gidderbaha and Barnala, and six in Chabbewal. The elections are scheduled for November 13, with vote counting taking place on November 23. These bypolls were called due to the previous MLAs being elected to the Lok Sabha.

Notable candidates include Manpreet Singh Badal, a former finance minister representing the BJP in Gidderbaha, and Congress candidate Amrita Warring, also in Gidderbaha. In Chabbewal, AAP’s Ishank Kumar and BJP’s Sohan Singh Thandal are contesting. Dera Baba Nanak will see Congress candidate Jatinder Kaur, while Barnala features BJP’s Kewal Dhillon and Congress’ Kuldeep Singh Dhillon. It’s worth noting that Amrita Warring is the spouse of Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. Ishank Kumar is the son of AAP’s Hoshiarpur MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal, and Jatinder Kaur is married to Congress MP from Gurdaspur, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa.
