Srinagar: In an encounter on Saturday in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, two unidentified terrorists were killed while clashes continued between security forces and militants holed up in downtown Srinagar.
Officials reported that the militants were neutralized in the Larnoo forest area of Shangus, with their identities expected to be confirmed after the operation concludes.
In a separate incident, an ongoing encounter is taking place in the Khanyar area of Srinagar city, triggered by intelligence reports regarding the presence of terrorists. As security forces approached the hiding militants, they opened fire, leading to the current standoff.
This marks the first encounter in over a decade in the old downtown area of Srinagar, historically a hotspot for separatist activity where militants previously operated with relative freedom. Over time, security forces had largely cleared this region of militant presence, making the recent gunfight a significant development.
On Friday, terrorists attacked and injured two non-local laborers, Sanjay and Usman, from Uttar Pradesh, in Mazhama village of Budgam district. They were promptly taken to the hospital, where their condition is reported to be stable.
Last month, a deadly attack by terrorists claimed the lives of seven unarmed workers from an infrastructure project in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district. The victims included six non-local workers and a local doctor from Budgam, who were engaged in constructing a tunnel to improve access between Gagangir and the Sonamarg tourist resort. Additionally, terrorists killed three army soldiers and two porters in the Botapathri area of Gulmarg.
