Chandigarh is not the capital of Punjab. This disclosure has been made in RTI. Along with this, the failures of previous governments have also come to light. Senior leader of Punjab BJP and former IAS officer Dr. Jagmohan Singh Raju has claimed that ‘Chandigarh’ is not the capital of Punjab.
Dr. Talking to reporters, Raju said that he had recently requested the state government through RTI to provide a copy of the notification issued in 1966 regarding making ‘Chandigarh’ the capital of Punjab. In response to the RTI, the state government clearly said that they do not have any notification or document regarding making ‘Chandigarh’ the capital of Punjab, from which it is clear that ‘Chandigarh’ is the capital of Punjab.
Dr. Raju said that in the year 1966, there was no proposal of a capital for Punjab state in the Reorganization Act 1966 by the Congress government. Referring to the act, he said that according to this act, ‘Chandigarh’ will not be a part of the state of Punjab. He said that in the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh implemented by the Congress government in 2014, it was clearly provided that Hyderabad would be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states for 10 years. After that a new capital will be built.
He alleged that Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Amarinder Singh (Raja Waring) had been invited for a public debate on this on 25 July 2024 but he did not attend. BJP leader Dr. Jagmohan Raju has termed the resolution passed in the Vidhan Sabha on 1st April 2022 as a joke. He said that the people of Chandigarh do not get the benefit of any government scheme of Punjab. Dr. Raju demanded that the state government should clarify its stand on the issue of making Chandigarh the capital of Punjab. Apart from this, Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab, should get independent status.
