Puducherry Police have registered 50 cases following complaints of scams targeting senior citizens, in which money has been fraudulently withdrawn from their bank accounts.
As per police reports, scammers have been impersonating bank officials and contacting elderly individuals to ask for sensitive information, including KYC details, Aadhaar numbers, Pension Payment Orders (PPO), bank account information, and PAN numbers.
Authorities have issued a warning to the public, particularly senior citizens, against sharing OTPs, as these scammers misuse such details to access and steal funds from their bank accounts. The Puducherry police emphasized that legitimate banks will never ask for sensitive information, including OTPs, over the phone.
The police have also noted an increase in various cybercrimes, including fake job offers, threats of arrest through messages, warnings about SIM card deactivation, and deceptive investment schemes. They advised senior citizens to remain cautious about fraudulent messages that request money for identity verification.
Furthermore, the Puducherry Cyber Crime Police issued a specific warning to Sabarimala pilgrims from the region. Scammers have been misleading pilgrims by claiming that enrollment in a government insurance scheme is required for the Sabarimala pilgrimage. This follows the Kerala government’s announcement of a Rs 5 lakh compensation for the families of pilgrims who may die during the pilgrimage.
Puducherry police clarified that no fees or insurance registrations are needed by the Kerala government and have urged the public not to transfer money in response to these fraudulent requests.
For any concerns, the public is encouraged to contact the Cyber Crime Helpline at 1930 or get in touch with the police.
