Following the establishment of an elected government in J&K, there has been a reported uptick in terrorist activities, with Intelligence agencies suggesting that the terror operatives across the border in Pakistan are frustrated by the largely peaceful participation in recent Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Earlier this month, a high-ranking commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), identified as Usman Bhai alias Chota Waleed, was killed after a prolonged gunfight in Srinagar’s Khanyar area. This incident resulted in injuries to two local policemen and two CRPF personnel.
Last month, terrorists killed six workers involved in an infrastructure project and a local doctor in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district. The killed workers were engaged in constructing a tunnel that would improve the travel route between Gagangir and the tourist destination of Sonamarg, aiming to boost economic growth and create jobs in the region.
Subsequently, attacks in the Botapathri area of Gulmarg, Baramulla district resulted in the deaths of three Army soldiers and two porters. Additionally, there have been attacks targeting non-local semi-skilled workers in Shopian and Budgam districts, although those attacked managed to escape with minor injuries.
Lieutenant-Governor Manoj Sinha has instructed police and security forces to aggressively pursue terrorists, as well as those who harbor or support them. The recent resurgence of terrorist incidents in areas previously considered safe has raised concerns among security forces, given the longstanding efforts and sacrifices made to maintain peace and integrity in the region.
In a firm stance, LG Sinha declared on Tuesday that any homes providing shelter to terrorists would be demolished.
