Punjab Govt to go Supreme Court, challenge HC directives on Civic body polls

The copy of the order issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court is being studied by the government.

Chandigarh: The Punjab government is preparing to go to the Supreme Court regarding the matter of conducting civic elections in Punjab. The government wants to conduct elections only after the delimitation of wards. For this, a petition will be filed by the government in the Supreme Court soon. The copy of the order issued by the Punjab and Haryana High Court is being studied by the government.

Punjab Local Bodies Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh has talked about going to the Supreme Court while talking to the media. He said that ward division has been done in many municipal corporations and city councils, while it is going on in some places. He said that it is expected that it will be completed by the end of January and February.

Earlier on Thursday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court took a tough stand regarding the civic elections and issued a notice of contempt to the Punjab government and the State Election Commission. They are accused of not following the orders of the High Court.

The court had earlier ordered the Punjab government and the State Election Commission to issue a notification regarding conducting civic elections within 15 days. But no action has been taken in this direction. After which a petition has been filed in the court regarding this. The court has now said in its order that if the notification is not issued within 10 days, a fine of Rs 50,000 will be imposed, and a contempt case will be filed.

The tenure of 5 corporations and 42 councils has ended

The five-year tenure of Phagwara, Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana Municipal Corporations and 42 Municipal Councils in the state has ended. A lot of time has passed since this time has been completed. But the government has not yet conducted elections.
