CIA staff ASI and senior constable accused of demanding Rs 60,000 bribe from drug smuggler, one arrested

Efforts are on to arrest the other accused Baljinder Singh soon.

Chandigarh: Punjab Vigilance Bureau during its drive against bribery has registered a case under anti-corruption law against ASI Baljinder Singh and Sr. Constable Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi of CIA Staff Malot, District Muktsar. In this case, Sr. Constable Gurpreet Singh Gopi has been arrested and the search is on for the other accused.

Giving information here today, a spokesperson of the Vigilance Bureau said that the case against the aforesaid police personnel has been registered after investigation of a complaint lodged on Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line by complainant Balveer Singh alias Beera, resident of village Serawala, District Sri Muktsar Sahib.

The spokesperson said that the complainant approached the Vigilance Bureau and alleged that he was asked to pay a bribe of Rs. 2,50,000 for not registering a false case against him by threatening to recover huge amount of intoxicating pills and heroin and later agreed to accept a bribe of Rs. 60,000. During the investigation, the recording submitted by the complainant shows Sr. Constable Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi first demanding Rs. 2,50,000 and later demanding Rs. 60,000 and ASI Baljinder Singh clearly agreeing to accept the bribe, which proves that both the accused had connived to demand bribe.

On the basis of this investigation report, a case has been registered against both the accused under the Anti-Corruption Act at Police Station Vigilance Bureau, Bathinda Range. Sr. Constable Gurpreet Singh CIA Staff Malot has been arrested and further investigation is underway. Efforts are on to arrest the other accused Baljinder Singh soon.
