Justice Sanjiv Khanna bids adieu to CJI Chandrachud, to take oath on November 11

A ceremonial bench sat to bid adieu to CJI Chandrachud. At the same time, a farewell ceremony was held in the evening.

New Delhi: After the retirement of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be the 51st Chief Justice of India. He will take oath as the Chief Justice of India on November 11. However, even before becoming the CJI, Khanna has stopped morning walks.

Justice Khanna used to walk alone for several kilometers every morning in Delhi around the Lodhi Garden area and his house, because he thought no one would recognize him.

Now that he has to take oath as CJI, Justice Khanna has been advised to go on a morning walk with security personnel. However, he refused to go with the security and said that he is not used to it. Instead, he had made decision not to go on morning walks.

CJI Chandrachud will retire on November 10, 2024. Before that, November 8 was his last working day in the Supreme Court. A ceremonial bench sat to bid adieu to CJI Chandrachud. At the same time, a farewell ceremony was held in the evening.

Chandrachud himself has recommended Sanjiv Khanna to the government. It is a tradition that the current CJI recommends his successor only when the Law Ministry requests it.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna’s name is on the seniority list after CJI Chandrachud, so Justice Khanna’s name has been put forward. However, his tenure will be only 6 months.

64-year-old Justice Khanna will retire on May 13, 2025. As a Supreme Court judge, Justice Khanna has written 65 judgments. During this time, he has been a part of about 275 benches.
