According to a report from the New York Times on Friday, tech billionaire Elon Musk met with Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, to discuss ways to ease tensions between Iran and the United States. The secret meeting, which lasted over an hour and took place in New York, was described as “positive” by two Iranian officials, focusing on reducing hostilities between the two nations.

In a recent call with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, former President Trump, who appointed Musk as co-director of a new government efficiency agency, handed the phone to Musk. The billionaire has been instrumental in providing communication support to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia.

During his presidency, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran, labeling it a “horrible one-sided deal,” and implemented strict economic sanctions on Iranian oil and banking. He also ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassim Suleimani in Iraq in 2020, which led Iran’s supreme leader to prohibit negotiations with Trump’s administration and sparked vows of retaliation from Iranian officials. Recently, federal prosecutors indicated that Iran had allegedly plotted to assassinate Trump before the upcoming election.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian met with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, in Tehran on Thursday, expressing Iran’s readiness to work with international organizations to clarify any concerns regarding its peaceful nuclear program. Pezeshkian emphasized that reports from the IAEA confirm Iran’s compliance with the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), despite the U.S. having unilaterally withdrawn from the agreement.

The New York Times also reported, citing an anonymous Iranian official, that during his discussion with Musk, Ambassador Iravani suggested that Musk seek sanctions exemptions from the U.S. Treasury and consider bringing some of his businesses to Tehran. Iran’s UN mission has stated that it will not publicly comment on the meeting.
