Electricity becomes costlier in Chandigarh; Tariff increased by 9.4%

The administration had proposed a 19.44% hike, but the commission approved only a 9.4% hike.

Chandigarh residents have been hit by inflation as Electricity prices have increased. The Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) has approved the increase in electricity rates in Chandigarh.

A tariff hike of 9.4% has been approved from 01.08.2024 for the financial year 2024-25 and due to this electricity has become expensive in Chandigarh. As per the mandate of the Electricity Act (2003), the JERC has decided to increase the electricity tariffs taking into account the cost of power procurement, revenue generation and other expenses to ensure stability of electricity.

The objective of this is to maintain the stability of electricity and balance the procurement cost of electricity. This decision has been taken by the JERC in response to the tariff petition filed by the Chandigarh administration. The administration had proposed a 19.44% hike, but the commission approved only a 9.4% hike.
