Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police have taken into custody a woman and her 35-year-old partner, accused of brutally abusing her minor children for opposing their illicit relationship. The incident took place in a slum area under the Maitri Vihar police station in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

The suspects are identified as Raju Nayak from Kumbhara Bazar in Kandhamal district and Sumitra Mohapatra, 30, from Manapur village in Nayagarh district. Their arrest follows a complaint filed by the children’s father, Prasanna Mohapatra, at the Maitri Vihar police station.

Police reports indicate that Prasanna has been working outside Bhubaneswar for the past year, while the accused woman and her children resided at their home in Mahavir Nagar, Salia Sahi. Raju, living nearby in Nilachakranagar, frequently visited the house, leading to the illicit relationship between him and Prasanna’s wife, which the children disapproved of.

The situation escalated on Tuesday evening when the siblings confronted Raju about his presence, demanding he leave. In response, Raju violently assaulted them with hot kitchen pincers in their mother’s presence, locking the door to prevent escape. After the attack, he applied ointment to their burns and imprisoned the children in a room.

The victims disclosed their ordeal to their father upon his return home on Thursday. Following Prasanna’s complaint, the police acted promptly to arrest both the mother and her partner. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted to their crimes.

The accused were presented in court on Friday, which ordered their judicial custody.
