Manipur: Authorities have recovered three bodies in Jiribam district, Manipur, but police are unable to confirm if they belong to the six individuals who have been missing since November 11.
A police spokesperson in Imphal indicated that the bodies were found near a river late Friday and have not yet been identified. They are being transported to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The six missing individuals – three women and three children from the same family – disappeared following violence in the Borobekra area, where ten individuals identified as ‘Kuki militants’ were killed in a clash with the CRPF.
The missing family, consisting of an elderly woman, her two daughters, and three minor grandchildren, had been residing in a relief camp near the Borobekra police station since violence erupted in the district in June.
In the wake of their disappearance, various organizations, including those representing the Meitei community, have alleged that the six were abducted by armed militants involved in the attack on the CRPF camp. Following the assault, the CRPF engaged in retaliatory action, resulting in the deaths of ten alleged militants.
Conversely, tribal organizations contend that those killed were not militants, but rather ‘Kuki Village Volunteers’ who were defending their community.
According to the police official, two elderly civilians – Maibam Kesho Singh, aged 75, and Laishram Barel, aged 61 – were discovered during search operations that followed the violent encounter in Jakuradhor village, where numerous homes were reportedly burned down by militants. One individual was also rescued alive, while another returned to the police station voluntarily; however, the six missing individuals have yet to be located. The two victims and the two survivors are all members of the Meitei community.
