Bihar: In a tragic incident in Balua village, Banka district of Bihar, five family members fell ill after ingesting a poisonous substance in an apparent suicide attempt. Kanhaiya Mahto, 40, and his wife Geeta Devi, 35, died during treatment on Saturday morning, while their three children—Sarita Kumari, 16, Dheeraj Kumar, 12, and Rakesh Kumar, 8—are currently receiving care at Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital in Bhagalpur.
According to police, the family was facing severe financial difficulties, having taken loans from multiple private banks, which resulted in constant pressure from bank representatives for repayment. This financial strain likely contributed to their desperate decision.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the family ingested sulfa tablets on Friday night. Kanhaiya’s younger brother rescued them and rushed them to a referral hospital in Amarpur around 2:30 a.m., from where they were later referred to Bhagalpur for further treatment.
Kanhaiya, who supported his family by driving an auto rickshaw, struggled with the weight of financial burdens, highlighting the devastating effects of poverty and predatory lending. The local community is now grieving, and a heavy atmosphere of sorrow hangs over Balua village, emphasizing the urgent need for better financial education, regulation of microfinance, and stronger social support systems to protect vulnerable populations from such tragedies.
