Imphal: The Manipur government has announced the closure of all schools in six valley districts today, prioritizing the safety of students and teachers, according to officials.
L. Nandakumar Singh, the Director of Education (School), issued an order stating that schools in the valley districts would remain closed due to safety concerns. This decision follows recent violent incidents in the area after the discovery of the bodies of three children and three women in Jiribam on November 15 and 16. In response to the violence, the government had previously closed all educational institutions for two days on November 18 and 19 in five curfew-affected districts: Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Kakching.
In a related development, students at Manipur University held a sit-in protest, burning effigies of the Chief Minister and Governor to condemn the brutal torture, rape, and murder of the six victims, who were abducted by Kuki militants on November 11 from the Borobekra sub-division in Jiribam. The protest was organized by the Manipur University Student Union (MUSU) and the Jiribam Students Forum, Imphal.
During the protest, N Ibenoubi, the daughter of one of the victims, Y Rani Devi, expressed her frustration with the government’s inaction. She recounted her earlier meeting with the Chief Minister, where she had pleaded for the rescue of her mother and family, only to be told that he could not determine the fate of the hostages. She insisted that the state government should be held accountable for their deaths.
MUSU president Nongthombam Suraj emphasized that studying is futile if students cannot contribute to the political and social betterment of society.
