Rio de Janeiro: Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India is ramping up its climate change initiatives and sharing its experiences with the Global South.
During his address at the G20 Summit, he highlighted that India has been a pioneer in meeting its commitments under the Paris Climate Change Agreement ahead of schedule, driven by its cultural values.
“We are moving towards more ambitious targets in renewable energy,” PM Modi stated at the G20 session focused on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition.
He cited India’s initiative to create the world’s largest rooftop solar array as a prime example of its commitment.
“India is sharing its successful strategies with the Global South, emphasizing affordable climate finance and access to technology,” he added.
PM Modi mentioned various initiatives, including the launch of the Global Biofuels Alliance, the promotion of “One Sun One World One Grid,” and the planting of a billion trees under the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (“A Tree in Mother’s Name”), all aimed at advancing sustainable progress in the fight against climate change.
He noted that over the last decade, India has implemented numerous projects in areas such as housing, water resources, energy, and sanitation, contributing to a more sustainable future.
Earlier, PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda (SDA).
“At the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro today, I addressed a crucial topic for the planet’s future—Sustainable Development and Energy Transition. I reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to the Sustainable Development Agenda. Over the past ten years, India has launched various initiatives that support a sustainable future in sectors like housing, water resources, energy, and sanitation,” PM Modi shared on X.
