In response to increasing incidents of reckless driving, the traffic department in Jammu and Kashmir has intensified efforts to regulate dangerous driving and take action against minors operating vehicles. Recently, two students from a well-known school in Srinagar lost their lives when their Thar Jeep collided with a parked truck during a car race involving three groups of students. This tragic accident sparked widespread grief and criticism on social media regarding the traffic police’s enforcement of safety measures.

In light of this, SSP Traffic for Srinagar, Muzaffar Ahmad Shah, revealed that the parents of the deceased students had previously been warned about allowing their children to drive. In an effort to prevent similar incidents, traffic police have impounded numerous vehicles for traffic violations.

Regional Transport Officer (Kashmir) Shahnawaz Bukhari has instructed the traffic department to invoke Section 199A against parents whose minors are found driving. This section mandates a three-year imprisonment and a Rs 25,000 fine for such parents. Additionally, any individual driving without a license faces cancellation of their vehicle registration, while licensed drivers caught speeding will have their licenses suspended.

The SSP has urged the community to work with police to ensure the safety of all citizens and their families.
