AR Rahman announces separation with wife Saira, says ‘pieces may not find their place again’

Mumbai: Oscar award-winning musician AR Rahman (57) and his wife Saira Banu (47) are separating after nearly three decades of marriage. Saira announced her divorce from her husband on Tuesday night. Saira’s lawyer Vandana Shah has asked for privacy from everyone.

The statement said- ‘The decision has been taken after emotional tension in the relationship. Despite deep love, the couple found that the tension and difficulties in their relationship have created a rift between them.’

Saira has also stressed that she has taken this decision due to the pain and suffering present in her relationship.

In a post on X, AR Rahman said, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”


AR Rahman married Saira on 12 March 1995. Saira was 28 years old then. It was an arranged marriage. Both have two daughters Khatija-Rahima and a son Amin. AR Rahman had revealed in a chat show of Simmi Grewal that his mother had fixed his marriage with Saira.

Rehman had said that he did not have time to look for a bride. But, he knew that this was the right time to get married. He was 29 years old then and he had told his mother- ‘Find a bride for me.’

The couple’s son Amin wrote in Instagram Stories, “We request everyone to respect our privacy at this time.”
