Kolkata: In a tragic incident in Barrackpore, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, three individuals, including two women, have been arrested by local police for allegedly abetting the suicide of Satyajit Bandopadhyay, a Trinamool Congress leader and Vice-Chairman of the local municipality. Bandopadhyay was found hanging in the attic of his rented home on the morning of November 16.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jayashri Das, and the husband-and-wife duo of Subhojit and Shukla Biswas. According to sources from the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate, their arrests were made following the discovery of a suicide note near Bandopadhyay’s body, which named four individuals, including the three who were apprehended. The note indicated that the couple had extorted several lakhs of rupees from Bandopadhyay using a fake video.
Bandopadhyay’s family reported that he had been under blackmail for some time due to this video. They noted that he had been missing for two days before returning home on the night of November 15, but he did not communicate with his family or explain his absence. The following morning, his body was discovered.
Barrackpore Municipality Chairman Moloy Ghosh stated that the incident should not be politicized, emphasizing the need for a thorough police investigation to ensure that those responsible are held accountable. He mentioned that he last saw Bandopadhyay at a municipality meeting on Thursday and did not notice anything amiss in his behavior.
