Punjab govt to issue notification for MC elections before Nov 25

Along with this, a copy of the Supreme Court's decision was also submitted to the court

The Punjab government will issue a notification for the elections of five municipal corporations and 43 municipal councils before November 25. This information was given by the Punjab government during the hearing in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on November 21. Along with this, a copy of the Supreme Court’s decision was also submitted to the court. After this, the court has disposed of this petition.

Earlier on November 11, in this case, the Supreme Court had asked the Punjab government to conduct elections in a total of 10 weeks. The apex court has ordered to issue the election notification in 15 days and complete the election process in the next 8 weeks.

The order given by the Punjab and Haryana High Court on November 6 was challenged in the Supreme Court by the state government. In that order, the High Court had issued a notice of contempt to the Punjab government and ordered to issue the election notification within 10 days. It was also said that if he does not do so, then he will be fined Rs 50,000, as well as a contempt case will be filed.

The five-year tenure of Phagwara, Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana Municipal Corporations and 42 Municipal Councils in Punjab has ended. A lot of time has passed since this period ended. However, the government has not yet conducted elections. This matter reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court demanding elections.

After hearing on October 14, the court had ordered that the notification regarding the elections should be issued within 15 days without ward division.
