Beirut: At least 20 individuals were killed and 66 injured following an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Beirut, Lebanon, according to the country’s Ministry of Public Health. The strike occurred early on November 24, targeting an eight-storey structure in the Basta Fawka neighborhood, which was completely destroyed and caused damage to surrounding buildings. Rescue teams are currently working to search for victims among the rubble.

Israeli media reported that the strike aimed to target a high-profile Hezbollah figure, though Hezbollah lawmaker Amin Sherri denied the presence of any party members, military or civilian, in the attacked building.

Additionally, on Saturday night, two paramedics lost their lives, and four others were wounded in separate airstrikes in Ain Baal, located in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon. The Public Health Emergency Operations Center linked these casualties to an Israeli drone attack on an ambulance responding to rescue efforts. A subsequent drone strike hit another ambulance team that arrived to assist, resulting in further injuries and the deaths of the paramedics.

The Ministry condemned this disregard for humanitarian efforts and urged the international community to respond firmly against Israel’s violations of international law. A recent World Health Organization report indicated that between October 7, 2023, and November 18, 2024, at least 226 health workers and patients in Lebanon were killed, with 199 others injured.

Since September 23, Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have intensified amid rising tensions with Hezbollah. In early October, Israel also began a ground operation across its northern border into Lebanon.
