Telangana: Tensions escalated in Dilawarpur, Telangana’s Nirmal district, as protests against the establishment of an ethanol factory turned violent on November 27. For the second consecutive day, villagers from Dilawarpur mandal blocked the Nirmal-Bhainsa national highway, with women protesters carrying bottles of pesticides and threatening suicide to halt the factory’s construction.
Protesters, carrying placards and chanting slogans, marched through the village and sat on the highway, eventually clashing with police, injuring several officers. They demanded that the government relocate the factory, citing concerns that it would harm crops, threaten their livelihoods, and damage the environment. They also expressed frustration over the lack of support from local politicians.
The protests intensified when some demonstrators tried to attack the Nirmal Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Ratna Kalyani, on Tuesday, vandalizing her vehicle. Despite attempts by the RDO to negotiate with the protesters, they insisted that the District Collector should attend the talks. Tensions peaked when the RDO’s vehicle was damaged and set on fire by some individuals, though the fire was quickly extinguished by police.
Following the incident, 23 villagers were booked for vandalizing the RDO’s vehicle. The highway was cleared by 11 p.m., but protests resumed the next morning as the villagers vowed to continue their agitation until their demands were met.
