Madhya Pradesh: Over 30 individuals suffered burn injuries during a ‘mashaal’ (flaming torch) procession in Khandwa district’s Malwa-Nimar region in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday night. The incident occurred at Ghantaghar Chowk, where more than 250 attendees, including women and children, had gathered.

As the procession concluded, participants holding the torches congregated at the chowk. A fire erupted when some torches fell onto the ground, igniting a liquid accelerant that had been placed there. This resulted in a large blaze, causing panic among the crowd and leading to a stampede-like situation as people tried to escape.

A video of the chaos was shared on social media, showing the frantic scene. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported. More than 30 people, primarily women and children, were taken to a hospital in Khandwa for treatment.

The police noted that most victims suffered burns to their hands and faces. Of those injured, at least 18 were treated and discharged after receiving first aid, while 12 individuals with more serious injuries remain hospitalized but are reported to be out of danger. Local BJP leaders were in attendance during the incident, which was organized by a group called ‘Veer Yuva Manch’ to protest terrorism and honor the victims of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.

Khandwa Superintendent of Police Manoj Kumar Rai confirmed that the administration had approved the procession and stated that an investigation is currently underway into the incident. The 2008 Mumbai attacks resulted in at least 166 deaths and over 300 injuries.
