New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Naresh Balyan is set to be presented in a Delhi court today in connection with a year-old extortion case linked to a gangster.

Balyan, who represents Uttam Nagar in West Delhi, was arrested on Saturday, shortly after the BJP released an audio clip allegedly featuring him in conversation with gangster Kapil Sangwan, also known as Nandu. In the recording, they discuss threats and extortion demands directed at a Delhi builder and others.

The crime branch obtained this audio recording, and Nandu is reportedly currently in London. Following his questioning at the crime branch office in RK Puram, South Delhi, Balyan was arrested.

The Delhi Police’s crime branch may also request police remand for the MLA.

During a press conference, Delhi BJP President Virender Sachdeva claimed that the gangster heard in the audio is Kapil Sangwan, originally from Najafgarh in West Delhi. He accused AAP leaders of being involved in extorting money from local businessmen and builders, asserting that Balyan is an “extortionist” who has been intimidating builders with the approval of AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal. BJP National Spokesman Gaurav Bhatia released three audio clips, alleging that Balyan and the gangsters discussed splitting the extortion proceeds through “hawala.”
