Kolkata: The West Bengal government has yet to provide formal approval for the charge sheet submitted against Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, and house staff member Asish Pandey, in connection with significant financial irregularities at the institution.
Although the CBI filed the charge sheet naming Ghosh, Pandey, and three others in a special court in Kolkata on November 29, it has not been officially accepted by the court due to the lack of state government clearance.
Ghosh and Pandey are state government employees, and the court cannot proceed with the acceptance of the charge sheet until the government responds. Sources indicate that the CBI has reached out to the state government multiple times but has not received a response.
Alongside Ghosh and Pandey, the charge sheet also includes Ghosh’s personal bodyguard Afsar Ali, as well as private contractors Suman Hazra and Biplab Singha. In addition to the financial irregularities, the CBI is investigating Ghosh and former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, in relation to the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar that occurred in August. The trial for this case is already underway in a special court in Kolkata.
The statements of two forensic doctors from R.G. Kar and a constable from the Tala Police Station are scheduled to be recorded in court on Monday, with the entire trial being conducted in-camera. Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, identified as the primary accused in the rape and murder case, has been appearing virtually since last week. The proceedings are moving forward on a fast-track and daily basis.
