Gurugram: From January to November 2024, the Gurugram Traffic Police collected fines totaling Rs 10.28 crore from 1.46 lakh traffic violators. The fines were mainly issued for offenses like wrong-side driving, which authorities have expressed concern over due to the risks it poses to pedestrians and other drivers.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic, Virender Vij, highlighted that people flagrantly ignoring traffic rules is a serious problem, especially as wrong-side driving can lead to fatal accidents. To address this issue, the police have been conducting special operations and setting up checkpoints to catch violators, aiming to curb traffic-related violence and improve traffic flow.
In recent months, the focus has been on offenses that contribute to fatal accidents, with wrong-side driving being a key factor. Violations during peak hours or at night are particularly dangerous. The traffic police have also been running awareness campaigns on safe driving, encouraging the public to avoid driving against traffic, not to drive under the influence, and to wear seat belts and helmets.
The police stress that road accidents can be reduced by following lane discipline and adhering to speed limits. They have also identified accident-prone areas and are taking measures to reduce fatalities. This includes plans to install traffic signals at Rajiv Chowk and increased surveillance on busy roads like the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, Sohna Elevated Highway, and Kundli-Manesar-Palwal Expressway, where accidents are more frequent. The primary goal remains to reduce road fatalities and ensure better adherence to traffic rules.
