New Delhi: The government has announced that approximately 6.39 crore individuals from rural areas have received digital literacy training through the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA). The initiative aimed to train one person from each of the 6 crore rural households across the country.

Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, stated in a written response to the Lok Sabha that the scheme has concluded, with 6.39 crore individuals trained as of March 31, 2024, exceeding the initial target.

IT training centers were established under the PMGDISHA initiative in various locations, including the districts of Bhiwani and Mahendergarh in Haryana. Additionally, the IT Ministry has launched the India BPO Promotion Scheme (IBPS) and the North East BPO Promotion Scheme (NEBPS) to foster job creation and IT/ITES growth in smaller towns, providing financial support of up to Rs 1 lakh per seat.

These schemes also encourage local entrepreneurship and aim to promote the hiring of women and individuals with disabilities within BPO/ITES units across various States and Union Territories, according to the minister.

India is recognized as a global hub for IT skills. According to a Stanford University ranking, India is among the top four countries—alongside the US, UK, and China—showcasing significant capability in artificial intelligence based on 42 indicators.

The government continues to take measures to maintain its competitive edge in IT skills, with initiatives like “FutureSkills PRIME,” developed in collaboration with the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM), designed to reskill and upskill individuals in emerging technologies like Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Robotic Process Automation, and more.

Furthermore, under the ‘IndiaAI FutureSkills’ initiative as part of the India AI Mission, fellowships are being offered to B Tech and M Tech students from engineering institutions recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
