Mumbai: Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has been admitted to the ICU at Lilavati Hospital in Bandra after experiencing speech difficulties and memory loss. According to hospital reports, he arrived in the emergency department with these issues, which he had been facing for a day. Ghai’s medical history includes ischemic heart disease, having undergone aortic valve replacement in 2009, coronary artery bypass grafting in 2011, and the insertion of a pacemaker that same year. He was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism.
Initial tests, including CT angiography of the brain, chest, and abdomen, yielded results typical for his age. However, an ultrasound of his neck indicated signs of thyroiditis, requiring further investigation. Additionally, a transrectal ultrasound of his prostate revealed a heterogeneous hypoechoic lesion in the left lobe, with a serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level exceeding 100. The medical team is assessing the possibility of paraneoplastic syndrome related to the prostate lesion, and a PET-CT scan is planned for him on Monday.
Subhash Ghai, who is 79, began his Bollywood career as an actor with small roles in films like “Taqdeer” and “Aaradhna,” later moving on to lead roles in “Umang” and “Gumrah.” However, he found greater success as a director, starting with his first directorial venture, “Kalicharan,” starring Shatrughan Sinha, which was a significant hit. Ghai directed several successful films in the 1980s and 1990s, collaborating with Dilip Kumar on notable projects such as “Vidhaata,” “Karma,” and “Saudaagar.” He received a Filmfare Award for Best Director for “Saudaagar” and is also credited with launching Jackie Shroff into stardom through the movie “Hero.”
