Sao Paulo: Brazil remains on high alert for severe storms, particularly in Santa Catarina state, where heavy rain has caused flooding, landslides, and evacuations across 22 cities, as reported by the civil defense authority.
Joinville, the state’s largest city, has experienced flooding since Thursday, with additional rainfall expected to continue until Tuesday morning, according to Xinhua news agency.
Dionisio Cerqueira recorded the highest rainfall in the area, with 186.4 mm over the past 48 hours, significantly increasing the risk of landslides.
The agency has issued warnings about potential meteorological events classified as having a “moderate to high risk.”
The storms in Santa Catarina have been attributed to a cloud front moving from central South America toward the Atlantic. Earlier this year, similar storms in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Sul resulted in 183 fatalities and impacted more than 90 percent of the region.
