Amritsar: Today is the last day of nomination for the civic elections in Punjab. Only 22 candidates filed their nominations in the first two days for the 85 wards of Amritsar, while the parties have not yet been able to field all their candidates. On the last day, most of the candidates are struggling to complete the papers.
Congress was the first to field its candidates in Amritsar. The first list released on Tuesday included 37 candidates. Shortly after, the BJP list came, which added the names of all the candidates. On the other hand, on Wednesday, the Aam Aadmi Party fielded only 72 of its candidates. Even after the list of three parties was released on Tuesday, only 22 nominations were filed in the city.
Today, the offices of Amritsar’s five returning officers will be crowded. Even if only the candidates of three parties contest in the 85 wards, it is estimated that there will be 255 candidates in Amritsar. Only 22 nominations have been filed so far, and most of them are independent candidates. According to an estimate, around 250 nominations can be filed today. It will be a challenge for the returning officers to take 250 nominations in just four hours from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
5 to 7 tables are set up at each nomination center. Nominations are being accepted after scrutiny of papers in three phases. In the last two days, each candidate who came to file for nomination took 20 to 30 minutes. In such a situation, it will be a challenge to take nominations of 250 candidates.
If nominations are accepted in a hurry, there will be a fear of cancellation of nominations in scrutiny.
Shiromani Akali Dal has so far fielded its candidates only in Ludhiana, while no list has been released yet for Amritsar, Jalandhar, Phagwara, and Patiala. At the same time, only 72 names of candidates have come out from AAP, AAP may soon release its list for 13 wards today.
