Attack on Democracy: BJP candidates stopped from filing nominations in Patiala, senior leaders protest

BJP also urged to Election Commission to take immediate and decisive action.

Patiala: In a major development, BJP candidates are not being allowed to file their nominations. Today is the last day to file nominations for elections to five municipal corporations- Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara — and 44 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab.

BJP Punjab took to X and condemned the act of obstructing candidates from filing the nomination forms. The post shared along with a video said, “An outrageous attack on democracy in Punjab! The @BhagwantMann-led AAP government is brazenly obstructing BJP candidates from filing nominations in Patiala—a clear sign of their fear of an impending defeat. This undemocratic and shameful conduct is unacceptable and must be condemned in the strongest terms.

BJP also urged to Election Commission to take immediate and decisive action. Reportedly BJP candidates were not allowed to enter the office as gates were closed of the MC office, Patiala.

Senior BJP Punjab leaders Former Union Minister Preneet Kaur, former Minister Rana Sodhi, BJP Punjab Mahila Morcha President Jai Inder Kaur, and other senior leaders protested against the Punjab Police and they were also stopped at the gate and not allowed to enter the MC office.

The process of filing nominations started on December 9 and today is the last date to file nomination.  December 12. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on December 13 and the last date for the withdrawal of nominations is December 14.

Elections to five municipal corporations — Amritsar, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Patiala and Phagwara — and 44 municipal councils and nagar panchayats in Punjab would be held on December 21.
