New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu participated in the ‘At-Home’ reception at the Army House in New Delhi on the eve of Vijay Diwas, which commemorates India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War.

In a post on her official Twitter account, the President’s attendance at the event was confirmed. Vijay Diwas is observed on December 16 each year to mark India’s triumph in the 13-day war, which culminated in Pakistan signing the surrender instrument in Dhaka, leading to the emergence of Bangladesh (formerly East Pakistan).

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also attended the reception, which was hosted by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi. The President engaged with numerous guests during the gathering.

The Indian Army noted that Vice-President Dhankhar and Defence Minister Singh interacted with veterans, members of the diplomatic community, sportspersons, and other distinguished attendees. The reception offered a platform for the President, Vice-President, and Defence Minister to connect with veterans, VeerNaris (widows of armed forces personnel), diplomats, sports figures, and notable individuals, including children from Asha schools and achievers from various fields. The event also allowed members of the tribal community to showcase their talents.

The dignitaries expressed deep respect for the VeerNaris, acknowledging their sacrifices for the country.

Earlier, President Murmu honored the soldiers who lost their lives during the 2001 Parliament attack, asserting the nation’s unity against terrorism. “On this day, I pay my humble tribute to the bravehearts who sacrificed their lives defending our Parliament. Their courage inspires us, and the nation remains grateful to them and their families. We are resolute in our commitment to combat terrorism,” she stated.

Fifty years ago, December 16 marked the largest military surrender after World War II, with 93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendering to Indian forces, leading to Bangladesh’s liberation. This day is celebrated annually as ‘Vijay Diwas.’
