New Delhi: Following a heated debate in the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha is scheduled to hold discussions on the Constitution today and tomorrow. The agenda includes a “discussion on the glorious journey of the 75 years of the Constitution of India.”
Before the debate commences, the House will pay tribute to the late ex-Member Shreegopal Vyas, eight ministers will present papers, and various Standing Committees will submit their reports.
This discussion in the Rajya Sabha comes amid rising tensions due to a no-confidence motion filed by the Congress-led opposition against Vice President and House Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Last week, the Upper House experienced disruptions and adjournments related to this motion, which accuses Dhankhar of biased behavior.
The Rajya Sabha’s focus on the Constitution follows a two-day debate in the Lok Sabha, which was initiated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, highlighting its historical importance and impact on the nation’s governance and international stature. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, in her first speech in Parliament, claimed that the BJP would have altered the Constitution if not for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi made remarks regarding Veer Savarkar that were met with objections from BJP members.
A key moment in the Lok Sabha discussions was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address, where he asserted that the constitutional amendments made by his government were not intended to consolidate power, unlike those made by the Congress party. He accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of frequently amending the Constitution to serve their interests, beginning with Jawaharlal Nehru. PM Modi also proposed 11 resolutions aimed at shaping the country’s future, inspired by the Constitution’s fundamental principles.
