Jerusalem: Israel has launched its inaugural power plant designed to generate electricity from sea waves, according to a statement from the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

Situated at Jaffa Port in Tel Aviv-Yafo, the plant boasts an installed capacity of 100 kilowatts. It was developed by the Israeli company Eco Wave Power, with collaboration from the French utility EDF and the Tel Aviv-Yafo Municipality, and funded by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The plant features 10 buoys aligned along the Jaffa Port breakwater, all linked to a patented energy conversion unit that provides easy maintenance and operation. The buoys move up and down with the waves, powering a hydraulic motor and generator located onshore. This system can produce electricity with wave heights as low as 60 cm.

Additionally, the plant is equipped with a smart control system that elevates the buoys above the water during storms to prevent damage.

All electricity generated is supplied to Israel’s national grid, with the state-owned Israel Electric Corporation purchasing the energy produced. The ministry emphasized that this project represents a significant step toward enhancing renewable energy production, reducing air pollution, and improving Israel’s energy security.
