Kolkata: The West Bengal Joint Platform of Doctors, representing senior physicians in the state, is organizing a 10-day protest starting Tuesday to protest the “default bail” granted to two men accused in the RG Kar rape and murder case.
Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal were granted bail last week by a special court in Kolkata after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to file a charge sheet within the 90-day period following their arrests. They are accused of tampering with evidence in the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protest is planned to take place at Doreena Crossing in central Kolkata, running from December 19 to December 26. The doctors’ group has requested permission from Kolkata Police to set up a protest stage, and if denied, they plan to approach the Calcutta High Court for approval.
Last Friday, the court’s ruling followed the CBI’s submission of only one charge sheet identifying a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, as the primary suspect in the case. Both Ghosh and Mondal face allegations of obstructing the investigation when it was initially conducted by the Kolkata Police.
In a related development, the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front has announced plans for further protests, having already held a rally at the CBI’s special crime unit office in Salt Lake. The group has warned of resuming their “ceasework” protests, previously halted for the greater public good. The victim’s parents have expressed that taking to the streets with the public may be the only viable solution moving forward.
