Hyderabad: Telangana is currently experiencing severe cold wave conditions, with a significant drop in minimum temperatures across various districts, including Greater Hyderabad.
The state’s average minimum temperature is recorded at 11.2 degrees Celsius, which is 5.5 degrees below the normal level. The Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) reports that 27 out of 33 districts have minimum temperatures below 10 degrees. Adilabad is the coldest area, averaging 7.9 degrees, 6.7 degrees below normal. The coldest location in the state, Bheempoor in Adilabad, saw temperatures drop to 6 degrees, while Bela nearby recorded 6.3 degrees.
Other districts like Zahirabad in Sangareddy reported a minimum of 6.6 degrees, and Bantwaram in Vikarabad recorded 6.7 degrees. In Greater Hyderabad, areas such as Moulali and HCU registered the lowest temperatures at 7.1 degrees. BHEL and Rajendranagar saw readings of 7.4 and 8.2 degrees, respectively, while Gachibowli recorded 9.3 degrees. Many neighborhoods faced temperatures ranging from 10 to 14 degrees.
Meteorologists from TGDPS indicated that Hyderabad’s average temperature has fallen to 14.9 degrees, four degrees lower than usual. Consequently, roads in the affected districts have been relatively empty, with reduced vehicular traffic in the mornings, as many people chose to stay indoors until late morning. Schoolchildren and commuters are encountering difficulties in this weather, prompting some to light bonfires for warmth.
The health department has issued warnings for residents to take precautions against the cold, along with a health advisory to guard against seasonal flu. With the Indian Meteorological Department predicting continued low temperatures, health authorities cautioned that the risk of acute respiratory infections, including influenza, may increase.
