Nagpur: The Maharashtra Assembly was adjourned for 10 minutes on Friday due to heated exchanges and slogan shouting among members over Congress legislators Vijay Wadettiwar and Nana Patole displaying posters of B. R. Ambedkar on their desks. BJP ministers, including Girish Mahajan and Chandrakant Patil, objected strongly, urging Speaker Rahul Narwekar to ask the Congress members to remove the posters. They argued that if Congress could display such posters, then they should be allowed to do the same.
BJP legislators chanted slogans condemning Congress for allegedly disrespecting Ambedkar and for imposing the Emergency. In response, the Opposition members shouted slogans like “Jai Bhim” and “Ambedkar.” Despite repeated calls from the Speaker for decorum, both sides continued their shouting, leading to a tense atmosphere in the House.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar supported the Congress members, stating that Ambedkar is an ideal for everyone and that the ruling party should also be allowed to display posters. However, the Speaker pointed out that such displays are against House rules. Patole attempted to raise a procedural point but was disallowed by the Speaker, who noted that it did not conform to procedural norms. Shiv Sena minister Gukabrao Patil insisted that if Patole was allowed to speak, ruling party members should also have the chance to express their views.
As the slogan shouting persisted, the Speaker adjourned the House at 11:14 a.m. After the adjournment, both ruling and Opposition members continued to chant slogans, with ruling party members displaying more Ambedkar posters, some criticizing Congress leaders for not awarding Ambedkar the Bharat Ratna and referencing their electoral defeats.
When the House reconvened at 11:25 a.m., the Speaker indicated he would proceed with the agenda unless members removed the posters, which they did not. He then announced the next item on the agenda, inviting members to raise points of propriety.
Earlier, the Speaker had rejected several adjournment motions filed by members. Wadettiwar attempted to bring attention to an alleged attack on the Mumbai Congress office by BJP workers, but his remarks were drowned out by ruling party slogans. Meanwhile, BJP minister Chandrakant Patil and his colleagues raised slogans outside the Assembly, targeting the Congress party, prompting a response from Congress, Shiv Sena, and NCP legislators protesting against the alleged mob attack by MahaYuti workers.
