Agartala: Tripura Police have detained six Bangladeshi nationals, including two children and two women, after they arrived in the state from Delhi while attempting to return to Bangladesh illegally. The individuals were arrested from a private guest house in Khowai district. According to police, the group, all residents of Feni district in Bangladesh, had traveled from Delhi to Khowai and stayed briefly in the lodge before planning to cross into Bangladesh with the help of Indian agents.
During initial questioning, the detainees admitted to having traveled to Delhi months earlier in search of work, where they illegally obtained Aadhaar, PAN, and EPIC cards. These counterfeit cards were confiscated by the police. The arrested adults were identified as Mohammad Kabir (37), Mohammad Mumin (23), Ayasha Khatun (70), and Tania Begum (35), along with the two children.
In the past five months, over 570 Bangladeshi nationals and 63 Rohingyas have been arrested by Tripura Police, Border Security Force (BSF), and Railway Police in various parts of Tripura for illegally entering India. In 2024, 55 Rohingyas out of 700 illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were detained, with contraband worth around Rs 50 crore seized by the BSF.
The BSF has ramped up its operations along the 856 km India-Bangladesh border in Tripura to curb illegal activities like infiltration and smuggling. Following unrest in Bangladesh since mid-2024, the BSF has increased border surveillance to prevent crime and infiltration, successfully thwarting multiple attempts by both Hindus and Muslims from Bangladesh. The India-Bangladesh border is shared by five states: West Bengal (2,216 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km).
