Srinagar: On the first day of the intense winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan,’ Srinagar experienced a chilling minimum temperature of -8.5 degrees Celsius, marking the lowest level since 2000. According to officials from the MET department, this temperature surpasses the previous low of -7.7 degrees Celsius recorded in 2018, with the all-time record being -12.8 degrees Celsius set in 1934.
The extreme cold has caused everything from window panes to water taps, lakes, streams, and river surfaces to freeze, leaving the Valley in a state of severe cold. Despite attempts to warm up with small fires, water in frozen taps remained inaccessible, forcing residents to wait for the temperature to rise before they could venture out for water.
Mornings saw deserted streets as people avoided going outside due to the icy winds and the risk of frostbite and chilblains, particularly for children and the elderly, who have been advised to stay indoors until the weather improves. A senior doctor highlighted the dangers associated with such low temperatures.
As electricity supply remains unreliable, many Kashmiris are relying on the traditional firepot called ‘Kangri,’ which is kept under the loose tweed garment known as ‘Pheran,’ to stay warm during the frigid conditions. Chillai Kalan will continue until January 30.
Other areas in the region also recorded low temperatures, with Gulmarg ski resort at -6.2 degrees Celsius and Pahalgam hill station at -8.6 degrees Celsius. Jammu city registered 5.4 degrees Celsius, Katra town 6 degrees Celsius, Batote 0.5 degrees Celsius, Banihal -4.4 degrees Celsius, and Bhaderwah -2.3 degrees Celsius.
